N Market: New York Fashion Week FALL 2011

Hey you guys!

New York Fashion Week is officially OVER! This season was very special for me. After 8 years of attending fashion shows on behalf of ESSENCE Magazine, I finally attended shows on my own behalf for N3 Magazine. This feeling was amazing! This was my first season attending shows at Lincoln Center. I felt a way about this. After going to the tents in Bryant Park for years, I felt betrayed that fashion week made this major move. Although Lincoln center is more spacious and is still a direct stop on my train, the B line, I felt like I was at a Las Vegas trade show...so, the jury is still out on the rating for this new location. It just felt like something was missing. On a brighter note, I saw all my PR girls (shout out to my girls at Betsey Johnson for 3rd row seats :) and got to catch up with people I had not seen in a few seasons. As I handed out love, hugs and my cool biz cards (EVERYONE has been in awe by them, I guess they are used to the average magazine biz card; white or cream, black type on matte paper. So I cant blame them:) Shout out to Ada Uzoma again for bringing my design vision to life!) My girl Qianna Smith, Fashion Editor at FashionQandA.com, was in from London so you know we had to do some shows together. The ever fab Dapper Lou was caught snapping shots of all the stylish people after the shows ended for his blog dapperlou.com. And last but not least, my Senior Editor Crystal Cunningham rolled with me and we represented N3 Magazine together! Along the way we had the pleasure of meeting Crystal Streets and got a peek at her newest jewelry collection on display at MB Fashion Week, Lyra Love Star. Next we ran into Atiba, a stylist also from House of Glam who leaked to us that he was currently on tour with PRINCE!!! He was MAD cool, and had a #FDC (a section soon to come on n3magazine.com that means FLY DOPE COOL for those not familiar) haircut that I loved! All in all, I had a great week. Until next time!!!!!

Changing The Voicmail

So for about 6 years my voicemail has been the same..it simply said: "This is Gwen, you've missed me, leave a message and I'll return your call in 24-72 hours." LOL funny I know, and Im sure most of you are very familiar with hearing this over the past years. It got lots of laughs from people. It was ment to be a joke, but also to be kind of honest. Living here in NYC, and having a lifestyle that is so similiar to the one depicted in the movies or tv shows means you have everything but TIME. My orginal voice mail was to let people know that I may not get right back to you, but just give me a few days...it was all love. Today I changed my greeting, and it was a major thing for me. I now announce myself as the Chief Editor of N3 Magazine. This is a huge step foward. I must now become more available and reachable. For myself and the success of N3 Magazine. Its funny how something so small as changing your voicemail message, can signify such monumentous steps that life can take. Well, thats about all!

More Than Proud...

Today is a very special day in the history of N3 Magazine. I have finally selected the editors that will launch N3 Magazine into existence. They are as follows: Crystal Cunningham (Senior Editor/Beauty Editor) Shania Covington (NEXTER Editor) Wendy Ward (Entertainment Editor DMV) Kyah Derry (Entertainment Editor NYC Metro) Josh Smith (Artz Editor) Whitley D (Fly Dope Cool Editor) Ada Uzoma (Art Director/Web Designer) Aja Valentine (Menswear Editor) Phillis K. (Resident Photographer) and Myself (Chief Editor and Acting Style Director.)

This day is so important because I received our first piece of content (article) from our Artz Editor Josh Smith. You will have to stay tuned on what his first article is about, but I am so proud to announce this to the world. I believe in talented youth. They (or we even though I'm 29 now YIKES!) have an infectious spirit and drive that I am honored to help grow and nurture. Its almost like a proud parent feeling. Had to document this day...keeping it short and sweet :) N3 Magazine will run 2011...and beyond...

N3magazine.com!!! We IN THIS PIECE!

WHEW!!!

The launch page is finally up yall! I had this image in my head for so long, and to finally see it live, its indescribable. Hold fast to your visions. They give you the preview for what is to come. Ada Uzoma is the amazing web designer that teamed up with me to create the N3 Magazine website. We went to Laurel High School together, and graduated in class of 1999. Whew that looks old to even write now! lol. We were both friends and great artists in school, so it seems fitting that we would meet up over a decade later and work together in building my dream. The N3magazine.com landing page is cool and charismatic, yet mysterious, leaving you in slight anticipation while giving you chills. lol. Vivid I know. It's where you can sign up to get details on the actual launch date of the website. The bottom line is that I'm doing something different. You deserve it.

Let me know what you think!

Synchronicity

Happy Friday to all!

Ever since I decided to start a magazine, and work for myself..everyday seems like Friday to me :) But this Friday was different. Earlier this year, after taking some much need time off of work to travel, I had a series of incidents that happened to me. I wont go into details, but lets just say, you probably would not believe them if I told you. I actually wrote all of incidents down in a journal so that i would make sure to believe my self long after the time had passed. For some reason, these things came to my mind today, and I felt the need to blog about it.

Some people say that we receive signs all the time, but are never aware because we are not mentally clear enough to realize them. We can receive signs for all kinds of reasons, but for the sake of this entry, lets just say that signs are hear to help us. They can let us know many things, guide us, give us confirmation or lead the way for us. I believe that this is what the signs I have witnessed have done for me.

Synchronicity is defined as " a meaningful coincidence." So lets do a breakdown: meaningful is defined as "full of meaning, significance, purpose, or value; purposeful;" a coincidence is defined as "a striking occurrence of two or more events at one time, apparently by mere chance." So when you think about it, another way to say it is a chance events that have major purpose or significance.

I know this seems deep, but all I can do is record whats happening now, to me, on my journey in Making The Magazine. After working in the magazine industry for 7 years, I found out that this is all I know how to do. And I believe, that the chance incidents that I have experienced are signs to let me know that I am where I am supposed to be, doing what I'm supposed to do, and being the person that I am supposed to be for these times.

I say all this to say, stop and slow down sometimes. We look at so much, but often don't see anything. The closer you are to yourself, the more the universe will bend for you...because in all actuality, your bending it.

Street Team Update October 6th 2010

Hello Street Team members,

I hope everyone had a great summer, and that you are all prepared for the fall! I am writing to give you a timeline of how I plan to move forward with the magazine. As I have sent before in previous emails, I am in the paperwork stage of creating this book. Starting a magazine is one of the most dutiful and ambitious projects that anyone can do, and it takes time to get going especially in the beginning..see below for an outline of what is going on:

Whats happening now with N3 Magazine:
-Logo has been designed and now in the Trademark process
-N3 has been registered as a DBA and is now recognized as an actual business :)
-Working on the Business Plan- a very detailed and important document outlining your business that must be presented to investors for funding and financial backing..to get us some money asap!
-Website- beginning designs have begun, the possible launch date will be by December..will keep you posted, and send rough drafts so I can get your opinion about how the designing is going and to get your personal profile pictures and right ups along with a list of your sites to put up
-Promotions- I am working on customizing press passes, and promotional materials for you to start promotions soon
-Prototype issue- this is perhaps the most fun part of the beginning stages of creating the magazine. I will be creating an actually mock up/example issue to use in presentations to industry executives. I want all Street Team members to participate in that also..writing, styling, hair, make up, photography, modeling, everything..that is much later down the line..but coming soon

What you can do now:
-Start to research the best most popular and cool places to do promotions in your city. Colleges, lounges, hang outs, artist communities, galleries, clubs, etc
-Send me a list of these places and reasons why you think they will work for promotions (passing out fliers, hanging posters, passing out promotion materials)
-Research any local organizations or clubs that promote youth in the arts, urban education or industry support

The "ideal" time line:

  • December 1st : Website up and running
  • December/January: Start street promotions
  • January 2011: Start creating prototype issue
  • Feb/March: Presentations to investors
  • May: Start to work on the first real issue
  • September: Launch first issue of N3 Magazine

I hope all of this information helps! Want to keep you guys posted on the progress of the magazine. Again, it is a long beginning process. I believe that if you start off right with something, you finish right in everything.
